Campaigns and Influencing Policy in Wales
From the anti-slavery movement to Make Poverty History, people and groups in Wales have been involved in campaigning for a fairer world.
Hub Cymru Africa works with civil society groups across Wales and around the world to put pressure on people in power to overcome poverty and create a sustainable future.
COP21 - 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Seventy schools in Wales have links with schools in Africa. In the run-up to the global climate summit in Paris in December 2015, young people from Wales and Uganda talk about the things that are important to them.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
A bold new global agenda to end poverty by 2030 and pursue a sustainable future was unanimously adopted in September 2015 by the 193 Member States of the United Nations. The Sustainable Development Goals offer us the opportunity to end poverty, promote prosperity and well-being for all, protect the environment and address climate change.
Civil society groups in Wales were involved in the development of the goals. Now it will be up to us all, from all around the world to help achieve them.
Well-being of Future Generations: the Welsh Response
A key part of the Welsh response to the Sustainable Development Goals is the Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) – a new law passed by the Welsh Assembly which puts a duty on Welsh public bodies to work towards improving the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales.
Internationally focused groups in Wales played a key part in ensuring that a globally responsible Wales is one of the seven goals. We are now working together to make sure that Wales maximises its contribution to eliminating poverty world-wide.
Global education motivates, empowers and enables people to become active, responsible citizens of Wales and the world, through:
• Engaging with contemporary issues and becoming knowledgeable about their community, society and the world
• Understanding and exercising their human and democratic responsibilities and rights
• Respecting the needs and rights of others, as members of a diverse society
• Showing their commitment to the sustainability of the planet
Hub Cymru Africa is part of the Wales Alliance for Global Education: a group of NGOs, local authority representatives and education practitioners. We share a commitment to ensuring the education system supports Wales to be a stronger, world leading nation – informed about social justice in Wales and around the world, with the skills to compete on the global market while contributing to a more sustainable future for all.
