it was very clear the local people have the knowledge and expertise on the ground, they are the ones that know their community and their culture, that knowledge is invaluable for the right work to be carried out. The needs assessment by those on the ground ensures the problems facing them are the ones to be addressed and solutions found. The projects need to be sustainable for the benefit of the community or it is a short term solution which can leave the community feeling let down and devalued. When community workers and the community are involved in their future their is a sense of ownership and accountability and the relationship between the partnerships is on an equal basis with a common respect for each others roles.
The video says the international organizations have to work together in partnership with locals as they have a true definition of the community they live in in regards to culture, transport, security, experience, community history among others in finding solution to community problems. About needs assessment, local communities know their community problems and possible solutions. therefore its important to put communities at the forefront in identifying their community needs and sustainability plan.
The local people in the video clearly had a passion for helping their communities. What the local helpers also demonstrated they had was local knowledge, e.g. of culture, of the terrain, of the security situation, of the needs of vulnerable families. Outside “experts” may learn these things, but never know them as well as those with”lived experience”. Locals must be in the lead in needs assessment.
